# FAQs

The FAQs section is where you manage every question-and-answer pair on your site — shipping questions, refund policies, account help, anything customers ask often. Each FAQ you write here can show up on your public FAQ list and is also used by your AI assistant when it answers visitor questions. Write the answer once, use it everywhere.

## What's on this page

### Header

At the top you'll see two small chips next to the section title:

- **{count} visible** — How many published FAQs are shown on your public site FAQ list.
- **{count} total** — How many FAQs exist in total (including ones hidden from the site list).

To the right are two buttons:

- **Manage categories** — Opens the category manager so you can rename, reorder, add, or delete categories.
- **Add FAQ** — Opens the form to write a new question and answer. See [Add / Edit FAQ](add-edit-faq.md).

### The FAQ library

The main view groups every FAQ by category. Categories appear in the order you set in the category manager. Each category header shows the category name and a small count of how many FAQs sit in it.

Within a category, each row shows:

- **Drag handle** (`::`) — A visual handle for ordering FAQs (visible as a cue; reordering is done through the category manager for categories).
- **Chevron** (`>`) — Click anywhere on the question to expand the row and read the answer.
- **Question** — The text of the question.

Hover over a row to use the three action icons on the right:

- **Show / Hide on site FAQ list** (eye / eye-off icon) — Toggles whether visitors see this FAQ on your public FAQ list. An open eye means the FAQ is shown on the list; click it to hide. An eye with a slash means the FAQ is hidden; click it to show. Published hidden FAQs can still be used by assistants whose FAQ knowledge source is enabled.
- **Edit** (pencil icon) — Opens the FAQ in the editor. See [Add / Edit FAQ](add-edit-faq.md).
- **Delete** (trash icon) — Permanently removes the FAQ.

### The expanded answer

Click the question to expand the row. You'll see the full answer below it. If no answer has been written yet, the row shows "No answer saved yet."

### Category manager (modal)

When you click **Manage categories**, a dialog opens. From here you can:

- **Reorder** — Drag any row using the dots handle on the left, or focus a row, press Space, and use arrow keys to move it.
- **Rename** — Click the pencil icon on a category, type a new name, and click **Save**. Every FAQ in that category updates automatically.
- **Delete** — Click the trash icon. If FAQs are still using the category, you'll be asked to confirm — those FAQs get moved to **General**.
- **Add** — Type a new name in the **Add category** field at the bottom and click **Add**.

The **General** category is the default home for FAQs and can't be deleted.

If you try to add or rename a category with an empty or duplicate name, a red inline alert appears in the dialog (for example, "That category already exists.") explaining what to fix.

### Empty state

If you haven't created any FAQs yet, you'll see a placeholder reading: "No FAQs have been created yet. Add FAQs here so the assistant can use them and show selected answers on the site." Click **Add FAQ** to get started.

## Common things you can do here

### Add a new FAQ

Click **Add FAQ** in the top right. Fill in the question, answer, and category, then click **Save**. See [Add / Edit FAQ](add-edit-faq.md) for the walkthrough.

### Show or hide an FAQ on your site

Hover over the row and click the eye icon. When the FAQ is shown, the icon is an **open eye** — click it to hide the FAQ. When the FAQ is hidden, the icon is an **eye with a slash** — click it to show the FAQ. A hidden published FAQ remains searchable when the relevant assistant's FAQ source is enabled.

### Edit an answer quickly

Hover over the row and click the pencil icon. The editor opens with the question, answer, and category ready to update.

### Reorganize your categories

Click **Manage categories**. Drag rows to reorder them — the new order takes effect immediately on this page and in shared FAQ category selectors. Add a new category by typing a name at the bottom and clicking **Add**.

### Move FAQs between categories

Open the FAQ in the editor (pencil icon), pick a different **Category** from the dropdown, and click **Save**. The FAQ moves to its new category group instantly.

### Find an answer you know exists

Scroll through the category groups, or open the relevant category by clicking its FAQ rows to expand them. There's no search on this page yet — the page is designed to be scanned by category.

## Tips

- **Visibility is per FAQ.** Hiding an FAQ doesn't delete it. It only removes it from the public FAQ list; a hidden published FAQ remains eligible for assistants whose FAQ source is enabled.
- **Published FAQs can feed the assistant.** Hidden published FAQs remain eligible, but drafts and internal entries do not. FAQ retrieval must also be enabled for the relevant assistant assignment.
- **Categories are shared.** Renaming a category updates every matching FAQ; category order is reused by the FAQ overview, editor, and assistant tools.
- **The General category is the safety net.** Any FAQ whose category is deleted gets reassigned to General, so nothing goes missing.
- **Permissions matter.** If you don't have edit permission, the **Add FAQ**, **Manage categories**, edit, delete, and visibility buttons are all disabled. Ask an admin for the right access.

## Troubleshooting

- **An FAQ I added isn't showing up on my site?** Check the eye icon next to the question — if it shows a slash, the FAQ is hidden from the site list. Click it to show.
- **The Add FAQ or Manage categories button is disabled?** You don't have permission to edit FAQs. An admin needs to grant you content editing access.
- **A category I deleted didn't disappear?** If FAQs were still in it, they were reassigned to General; the category itself is gone but its old FAQs now live under General. Open General to find them.
- **Can't delete the General category?** That's expected — General is reserved as the default home for FAQs and can't be removed.
- **Category renames didn't apply to all FAQs?** Renames update every FAQ in the category. If you see leftover items in the old name, the rename may have run into a save error — try again, and check the message banner at the top of the page.
- **Looking for the public FAQ page itself?** The page that displays your FAQs lives in the **Pages** section. Use [Pages](pages.md) to edit how the FAQ list appears to visitors; use this section to manage the FAQ content itself.
