Use Tools → Policies to prepare your site's Privacy Policy and Terms of Service, publish them at their fixed addresses, and add their links to the footer.
Check whether the policy is already published before editing. Saving a published policy updates the public page immediately. For a new or unpublished policy, Save keeps a draft until you enable it.
Choose the policy to edit
Open Tools → Policies. Each row shows the policy, its status, and an Edit pencil button.
- Privacy Policy lives at
/privacy-policyand explains how your site handles visitor information. - Terms of Service lives at
/terms-of-serviceand describes responsibilities and conditions for using your site.
Enabled means the page is published and linked from the footer. No page yet means it has not been created. A status containing published, footer hidden means the page is already public even though its footer link is missing.
Use the pencil button to review or prepare the wording before enabling a policy. Enabling a policy that has no page yet can create and publish the default generated text.
You need permission to edit both pages and navigation to use the policy controls. If they are read-only, ask your administrator to check your feature access.
Build a starting draft
The Guided generator creates wording from the fields and options you select. It is a starting point for review, not a guarantee that the result covers your business's requirements.
- Select Edit beside the correct policy and open Guided generator.
- Fill in Business or Site Name, Contact Email, and Effective Date. Check the prefilled values. If Contact Email is blank, the generated wording directs visitors to your site's contact page instead.
- Review every option under Site features. Select only what your site actually uses, such as contact forms, email lists, accounts, payments, or bookings where offered for that policy.
- Review Operations & visitor rights for the Privacy Policy, or Legal protections for the Terms of Service. Check the default selections as carefully as the options you add.
- Read the complete Preview, including the business name, contact details, date, and every included section.
These options change the policy text. They do not enable site features, configure tracking, change payment rules, or create a process for handling visitor requests.
Have the wording reviewed for your business before publishing it. Cedros recommends review by a qualified lawyer; the generator is not legal advice. If the starting text needs more detail or different wording, continue in Custom markdown.
Use your own policy wording
Choose Custom markdown to paste an existing policy or edit the generated wording directly. When the custom text is empty, switching to this tab fills it with the current generated policy.
- Open Custom markdown and replace or edit Policy markdown with the complete wording you want visitors to read. Paste text in Markdown; this editor does not import a Word or PDF file.
- Set Effective Date. If your custom text includes a date, update that text too: changing the date field does not rewrite the custom body.
- Check Preview for headings, lists, links, dates, and missing sections. Confirm that it shows the policy you intend to save.
- Leave Custom markdown selected when saving if you want to use that wording.
The active mode determines the saved page's text. Switching back to Guided generator uses the generated wording, even if custom text is still retained. Later changes to the guided options do not automatically rewrite custom text you already entered.
Keep a separate copy of wording that is still under review, especially when the policy is already published and a Save would update it immediately.
Save and publish
Select Save when the preview is ready. A successful save returns you to the Policies overview.
For a new or unpublished policy, Save stores the draft. To publish it:
- Find the policy in the overview and turn on its Status toggle.
- Read Enable Privacy Policy? or Enable Terms of Service?. Check which policy and public address you are enabling.
- Select Accept & enable to publish it and add the footer link, or Cancel to leave it unchanged.
- Open your public site, follow the footer link, and check the complete policy as a visitor.
For an already published policy, Save republishes the changes immediately—even if its footer link is hidden. Finish your review before saving. The Effective Date field is displayed policy information; it does not schedule publication for that date.
If you select Exit with unsaved edits, choose Keep editing, Exit without saving, or Save and exit. Save and exit has the same publication behavior as Save.
Repeat the process separately for the other policy. Saving one does not update the other.
Manage the footer link and availability
Enabling a policy publishes its page and adds the matching link to the footer. The policy addresses are fixed, so use the existing policy rows rather than creating duplicate legal pages at different addresses.
If the status says published, footer hidden, the page is still available at its public address. After reviewing its saved content, turn on its Status toggle and confirm Accept & enable to publish the saved version and restore the footer link. Check the result on your public site.
Turning an enabled policy off unpublishes the page and removes its footer link. It takes effect without an additional confirmation dialog. Use this only when you intend to take the policy offline; it is not just a way to hide the link while leaving the page available. The saved policy remains available for editing and later re-enabling.
Resolve common problems
The fields or Status toggles are disabled. Wait for loading to finish. If the page remains read-only, ask for access to edit pages and navigation.
The editor says it loaded defaults because saved selections could not be read. Do not save those defaults over your existing policy. Exit without saving, reload, and reopen the policy. If the error persists, ask your administrator to resolve it before making changes.
Save reports a validation error. Use a real calendar date. In Custom markdown, enter nonempty policy text. Follow any message about the length of the business name or contact email, then check the preview again.
I saved, but visitors cannot see the policy. A new or unpublished policy still needs its Status toggle enabled. Check the overview and the exact public address after enabling.
My custom wording did not appear. Reopen the editor and check the active mode. Select Custom markdown, verify the retained text and preview, and save only when the result is ready to go live.
Publishing or the footer update failed. Read the error and reload the overview to check the actual state before retrying. Publication and footer updates may not both have completed. Confirm both the public page and its footer link after the retry.
